Alger Heights has always been a tough neighborhood for restaurants, and I have watched many of them come and go over the years. When I heard that the Old Goat was going to give it a go I did have concerns about their success because nobody had ever tried a restaurant this large in Alger. This did not deter owner Cory DeMint. DeMint had already successes with The Electric Cheetah and Uncle Cheetah’s Soup Shop, so to him this restaurant was a natural third step.
A lot like the Electric Cheetah, The Old Goat features an ever changing eclectic menu with something for everybody. Sauerbratenpotenyocken Heinen Bell, Saucy Crusty Baked and Bubbly Goat Balls, Grillie Vanilli and the very popular Board of Education are all items on the menu now. Inside humor and pop culture knowledge is vital to understanding the names of many of the menu items.
Demint is always looking to innovate as well. He recently added a Sunday brunch, an all you can eat soup and salad bar for weekday lunches, a bakery counter in the back of the building, a Schnizelbank night on Thursdays for those of us who remember that popular restaurant and miss their German fare, and he is getting ready to start up a TV dinner/bingo night on Mondays. He is always looking for new innovations to test the boundaries of what his restaurants can offer.
All things considered, The Old Goat has been wildly popular. It is fair to say that you can continue to expect the unexpected and that the “unexpected” will continue to be done to the same high standards that we have come to expect from this family of restaurants. There are even rumors of a 4th DeMint estaurant in the near future , but that is a story for another day.
