Have You Been…..(Lindo Mexico edition)

By at January 17, 2016 | 7:32 am | 0 Comment

Pozole (This weeks featured dish) I see the majority of restaurants spend their entire existence in one building, but Lindo Mexico  is the exception to this rule. Last month, Lindo moved into its 3rd location (1742 28th St. SW, Wyoming, MI 49519) in just 6 short years with each successive location being nearly twice the size of the previous. It is crazy to see the

Have You Been…..(New York Fried Chicken edition)

By at December 6, 2015 | 7:05 am | 0 Comment

There was a quiet but persistent group of people on EatGR saying "New York Friend Chicken had the best chicken in Grand Rapids" (743 Division Ave S, Grand Rapids, MI 49503).  I ignored that drumbeat for months.  Let's face it, there can only be one "best", and I was hearing this from such a small group of people, that I knew they could not be right.  If they were,

Have You Been…..(The Grilling Company edition)

By at November 29, 2015 | 7:36 am | 0 Comment

For just about ever, The Grilling Company (6231 West River Dr. Grand Rapids, MI)  has been a mobile caterer offering barbecue to the Grand Rapids area. In an age where there was virtually only one local barbecue restaurant in town, the mobile vendors were one of the only ways to access good barbecue in town.....and then it happened.  Over a period, of 12 months,

Have You Been…..(Graydon’s Crossing edition)

By at November 15, 2015 | 6:27 am | 0 Comment

I will have the Maitake Mushroom Vindaloo and Bangladesh Burrito please. Neither one of these dishes sound possible in Grand Rapids, let alone at the same place, but both of them can be currently found on the menu at Graydon's Crossing. Graydon's Crossing, located at 1223 Plainfield Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49505, serves a fairly eclectic menu which I can only

Have You Been…..(Noble Restaurant edition)

By at November 7, 2015 | 6:04 am | 0 Comment

It is a difficult thing to run a successful restaurant for 11 years, and then make a substantial change in food direction,  but that is exactly what Andrew Lamppa did when he abandoned his old 44th St. Diner moniker for the new Noble Restaurant (1851 44th St. Wyoming, MI 49519). Most restaurants use some amount of canned or prepackaged food products to run

Have You Been…..(Sandy Point Beach House edition)

By at November 1, 2015 | 3:40 am | 0 Comment

Not only had I never been to Sandy Point Beach House, I hadn't even heard about it until 4 months ago.   I first became aware of them when I saw a photo of their lobster mac and cheese in the EatGR Facebook group. Sandy Point Beach House, which is located at 7175 Lakeshore Dr, West Olive, MI 49460, is between Holland and Grand Haven in an unassuming building

Have You Been…..(Noodle Monkey edition)

By at October 25, 2015 | 6:22 am | 17 Comments

Shoyu Ramen Noodles I heard the cries for months:  "We want real ramen noodles in Grand Rapids".  Then, a place opened up downtown and the cries changed" "It isn't authentic enough".  So, enter Noodle Monkey. Noodle Monkey is the concept of Yang Hang, owner of Rak Thai and Rak in the downtown market.  With the recent heavy saturation of Thai restaurants in town

Late October 2015 news update (Food Trucks)

By at October 22, 2015 | 4:21 pm | 0 Comment

Wow, what a year it has been for food trucks in Greater Grand Rapids.  It isn't that the laws have gotten any better, or that things are inherently easier, they are not.  What did happen is that we were able to raise the level of awareness of food trucks in the area (a total that is now hovering around 30).  Awareness is the first step needed to show the business

Have You Been….. (Crooked Goose edition)

By at October 18, 2015 | 7:51 am | 1 Comments

I am almost ashamed to admit this, but I have only been to Crooked Goose one time in my life.  As I recall, I got a burger and a beer flight. I think that part of the reason that I haven't gone there more is that I just don't know what is on their menu.  This is probably true of many of the places that people don't go to.  Not knowing what is on the menu when

Pulaski Days are here to stay…..at least for the weekend!

By at September 30, 2015 | 8:16 am | 0 Comment

It is that time of year again when we celebrate our town's strong Polish heritage by visiting as many polish halls that we can and stuffing our face with pierogies and kapusta while quaffing down pints of beer at Polish halls.  OK, at least that has always been my take on it. At any rate, Grand Rapids has a strong Polish heritage, and we plan to celebrate.  Friday
